Everything is difficult when you’re depressed. Mundane activities such as making the bed, washing the dishes, and taking care of yourself can feel unbearable, if not downright impossible.

As you grapple with extreme exhaustion and disinterest, you helplessly observe the growing clutter in your home. This further exacerbates your mental well-being.

Research published by BMC Public Health notes that messy spaces signify depression. Also, the Journal of Psychiatric Research published an article linking clutter, depression, and hoarding.

It goes without saying that one’s living space certainly reflects their mental state.

How do you fix this?

We’ll look at a few steps you can take to ease depression by getting rid of clutter in your home.

Clutter and Stress

Clutter can cause depression.

Perhaps your depression isn’t causing your mess, but the other way around. Researchers from UCL claim that having a cluttered home is linked to high levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Excess cortisol can lead to depression and other mental health conditions.

Overcoming Depression at Home

Depression and messy homes are linked, and so are the ways to deal with both. Decluttering can help reduce stress and make you feel better.

But decluttering a very messy home can be challenging for most people. Below, we’ll highlight three easy steps to help you fight depression and work towards feeling better and healthier.

Start Small

It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you look at a pile of laundry, dishes, or junk that needs organizing. Instead, narrow your focus to one particular thing.

For instance, instead of folding all the laundry, start with only the towels. Accomplishing small goals is easier and offers more rewards than trying to tackle everything at once and, perhaps, never finishing.

Track your Progress

Steps to decluttering

Stay aware of what you’ve done and what you still need to do by creating a checklist. For every item you mark off, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment.

Start with only a small checklist, fewer than seven items, to not become overwhelmed.

Ask for help

Everyone needs help sometimes, but not everyone asks for it when they should.

Be courageous by asking a partner or family member to spend 10 minutes tidying the house with you.

Having an ally alongside you can boost your mood all on its own, and together, you’ll accomplish much more than either could do separately.

Don’t Wait

Don’t let your clutter get out of control. Start making a change in your home and health by taking smart, realistic steps now.

Messy spaces can lead to anxiety and stress, but you can avoid those bad feelings by tackling the mess bit by bit. Improve your home and life today!
